Bourges
July 16, 2018:
Today we had a teary goodbye in Villard and drove 4 1/2 hours north west to a town called Bourges. This was meant to be just a stopover on our 8 hour drive to the next farm we are working on but it turned out to be a great visit. We got settled in our hotel room, which looks like a ship berth, and drove into Bourges to explore with very low expectations. We parked easily near the biggest attraction in town, the Cathedral. James and the girls got tickets and spent over two hours exploring the tower for amazing views of the city and the catacombs down below. On the walk up to the tower the kids said the walls were covered with names engraved into the walls dating all the way back to the 1500's. I wandered around the church, watched an artist restoring a statue inside and then wandered around the old part of the city. There are amazing street where all the houses have exposed wooden beams and it looks like a scene from the town in Beauty and the Beast. There were amazing small alleyways and stairwells, cobblestone streets, gardens and quaint plazas with cafes all around. We loved walked around in Bourges and spent over four hours there. Tomorrow we finish the 3 hours to our next farm outside of Nantes.
